Rosecrans Memorial Airport of St. Joseph, MO, was named in honor of Sergeant Guy Wallace Rosecrans, the only airman from St. Joseph that died during World War I. Sergeant Rosecrans was born 28 July 1896 in Omaha, Nebraska and lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilber H. Rosecrans, at 5022 1/2 King Hill, St. Joseph, Missouri.

He was employed by Swift and Company, St. Joseph, before enlisting in the Army. Sergeant Rosecrans trained at Fort Logan, Colorado; San Antonio, Texas and Rautoul, Illinois prior to transferring to the Royal Air Force's 153rd Air Squadron in England, February 1918. On 7 May 1918, the 153rd Air Squadron transferred to base section #1, St. Jean De Monts (Vendee), France and established an Air Gunnery School.

Sergeant Rosecrans died 16 October 1918, at St. Jean De Monts, France, when he was struck by a propeller while helping a fellow aviator start his airplane. Rosecrans Memorial Airport was dedicated 12 May 1923.
