Hazardous Material Inventory Initiative
On September 14, 2009, the City sent a letter to all those businesses that are licensed as manufacturers, manufacturing agents, storage houses and vermin exterminators. The list is as follows:
Additional Information and documents:
- Excel Spreadsheet of Hazardous Chemical Inventory Statement
- Information sheet concerning the proper classification of hazardous materials according to the 2006 International Fire Code and the maximum allowable quantities as found in the IFC tables:
- Anyone who already has an industrial discharge permit with the city does not need to send us copies of their MSDS or Tier II reports. Our Water Protection division already has them. However, they will still need to complete a Fire/Hazardous Material Permit Application and properly classify their hazardous materials according to the 2006 IFC. The following is a list of those businesses who have industrial discharge permits with the city.
- Based on the comments presented during the Council Public Safety Committee meeting on October 1, 2009, businesses only need to submit information on the storage and use of hazardous materials when they exceed the reportable quantity listed in the attached list of reportable quantities. If the amount of hazardous material you have is less that that listed, you do not need to include it in your Hazardous Chemical Inventory Statement. However, these quantities are by classification and not by material. For example, if you have five different Class IA, Flammable Liquids, with each one only consisting of 5 gallons each, the total amount of Class IA, Flammable Liquids is 25 gallons which is a reportable quantity.
- For those of you interested in knowing how the 2006 International Fire Code defines a High Hazard Use Group, I’ve include the codes description of an H-2 and H-3 use group for your information. If you want additional information on either of these used groups or an H-1, H-4 or H-5 use group, please let us know by calling Clint Thompson, Interim CAD Director, at (816) 271-4757 or email at cthompson@ci.st-joseph.mo.us.
