The Puppies for Parole program is designed to give unwanted animals a second chance. Each dog has 2 handlers and they really focus on house breaking, basic manners (walking nicely on a leash, not to jump on people, not to mouth or play bite) commands (sit, stay, lay, leave it, and wait), and socialization. The dog will live with the handlers, who happen to be incarcerated for 4-8 weeks being taught skills that we feel will make them more adoptable. In other areas the adoption rates for dogs that have completed the program have been in the 90% range. The program is supported through donations and does not cost the City or the Shelter any money, other than labor for staff assisting in the transporting dogs and assisting with training and monitoring of the inmates. If you have any other questions about the program please feel call 816-271-4878.
Puppies that are currently in the program:
![]() Freddy |
![]() Rosie |
| Do not let this peaceful photo fool you! "Freddy" is a lot like the energizer bunny, he keeps going….and going… Freddy is a 4 month old Jack Russell Terrier mix that was picked up running loose. He is both fearless and entertaining, and will spend his time at the prison learning self control. Following his graduation, Freddy will make an excellent pet for an active family. | "Rosie" is a 2 year old female Puggle; this little girl will tease her way right into your heart! She loves to play and will work hard at getting you in on the game. Rosie will learn the abc’s of dog obedience while at the prison and graduate ready to take on the a new family that welcomes her with open arms. |
![]() Mocha |
![]() Joey |
| "Mocha" came into the shelter as a stray and when we found her owners they so frustrated with her digging under the fence, they signed her over to us! Mocha couldn’t help it, she was in season and nature took over. She is 37 pounds, nine months old, and very low to the ground! Mocha is built like a Basset but her coat is thicker like a Labrador. This girl is both sweet and silly and is ready to learn her P’s and Q’s so that she can make her new family happy! | "Joey" is a 6 month old male Lab mix; he is friendly and trusting. We don’t know very much about him because he was picked up running loose, but Joey seems to be a pretty easy going fellow. He appears to be fairly versatile and would fit in well in various home environments. Joey is going to study to pass his Canine Good Citizen test while in the prison so that he can make his new family proud! |
![]() Olive |
![]() Buddy Love |
| "Olive" is a 2 year old Heeler mix; Heelers are highly intelligent dogs and require regular exercise and mental stimulation. We expect Olive to be very trainable while in the prison, and would be best considered by someone dog savvy with time to give her a job. Not only WILL Olive work for food, she WANTS to! If Olive does not find a job in her new home, she may become bored and use her extra time to find trouble. | Hi, my name is "Buddy Love" and I am a 5 year old Lhasa Apso. When my people brought me to the shelter they said that they had to move to a new home and I couldn’t go with. They also said that I lived outside on a chain all the time. Shelter staff felt sad for me and they said my hair was a mess and they could not even see my face. I was a little bit scared and embarrassed so I peed on the wall at the shelter. . They said I was a good candidate for the Pups for Parole program and they sent me for a haircut. Now they say I am really cute but also really long and skinny. I am just very scared but they told me not to worry because the people at the prison are really kind and they will take special care of me. They also told me that my handlers will teach me that I shouldn’t lift my leg on things when I am inside, I don’t understand why this is not okay because I have always just lifted my leg wherever I want. They are going to teach me how to be good so I can live inside and get lots of attention with my new family. I don’t know what this means but it sounds really great so I hope it works out. |
![]() Buster |
![]() Isabelle |
| "Buster" is a one year old Pointer mix; although his brindle coloring has us stumped! Buster is both energetic and graceful, we intend for his training in the Pups for Parole program to help teach him how to follow the rules. Buster is somewhat of a social butterfly and loves people and dogs alike. He should do quite well in his training and graduate ready for a forever family. | “Isabelle” is a 2 year old German shepherd mix; she is a fun-loving tomboy with buckets of love to give. She behaves just Slightly over the top when we take her out of her run, but you can’t blame a girl after that lack of stimulation! The guys at WRDCC will show her the ropes and teach her a thing or two about being top dog. When they are done with her Isabelle will be ready to show boat her talents. |
![]() Rocky |
![]() Maya |
| "Rocky" is just such a quality dog! Here's a real treasure for someone with time and room for a large young dog. He has all the looks and personality the Goldens are famous for, and you can look forward to many hours of laughter and companionship from this guy. He is nearly full grown, under 12 months and about 40 lbs, so he will fill out some. Rocky’s intelligence and enthusiasm will ensure he graduates the program ready to impress his new family! | What a stunning dog! "Maya" is about a year old and it is easy to see from her intelligent expression why she displayed anxiety in her run. Maya is going to WRDCC to enhance her social skills and learn a thing or two about becoming the classy dame she was born to be. |
![]() Fern |
![]() Tiffy |
| This cute little ladybug has had a rough go of things this year, her new year’s resolution was to find a new home to pamper and love her. Everything was going as planned and she found a nice couple to spoil her, but those nasty heartworms got in the way! "Fern" is now undergoing treatment for heartworms, and she will go into the prison program for some R&R and basic training. There is plenty of time in 2012 for Fern's hopes for a new family to come true. | "Tiffy" has those soulful lab eyes that make her look like she's pleading with you--and she probably is! She waited patiently for her family to come and bring her home, but her patience went unanswered. Tiffy is getting a second chance and going into the prison program for training and will make someone a loving, faithful companion after she graduates. |
