Local Press Releases:
Who can get the H1N1 flu vaccine?
Effective December 8, 2009, the 2009 H1N1 vaccine will be made available to everyone.
Where can I get the H1N1 flu vaccine?
The City of St. Joseph Health Department maintains an up-to-date list of H1N1 vaccine providers, including physicians and pharmacies, at www.stjoemo.info/health/H1N1VaccineProviders.pdf. In addition, the City of St. Joseph Health Department will begin offering the H1N1 vaccine on November 17TH on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8-11am and 1-4pm at the Health Department, located at Patee Market Health Center, 904 S 10th St.
General information about H1N1 and seasonal flu can be found at www.stjoemo.info/flu or persons may call the local H1N1 information line at 816-271-5325 or 1-877-FLU-4141 (1-877-358-4141).
Dr.’s offices and patient care clinics have been very busy serving patients with flu-like symptoms. Many people are concerned about whether they or their family members should get the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine. Health care providers and public health officials, including the CDC, maintain that people in the target group (expanded from the priority group) should get vaccinated.
H1N1 is rarely confirmed at a health care provider’s office. A “rapid flu test” may confirm a person has a type of flu, but even these tests are not 100% accurate, and they do not determine which strain is present. People who believe they have had H1N1 flu virus assume they have built an immunity to it and do not need the vaccine, but because so few cases are actually confirmed, the best line of defense is to get vaccinated.
School aged children are new to the target group, and children continue to be the focus of health care providers. Healthy children aged 6 months through young adults up to 24 years should be immunized as soon as possible. Also new to the “target group” are people through age 64 who have a chronic health condition. Women who are pregnant, health care providers and those who care for infants up to 6 months of age continue to be encouraged to get immunized.
Contact your health care provider or click HERE for further and more detailed information on providers administering the vaccine. Multiple patient care clinics are administering vaccine to current patients.
