To Your Health (Weekly) Avoiding Snow Pain With all the snow this winter, it might be a good time to
re-emphasize proper shoveling techniques. Snow shoveling
can be like weight lifting, so it is important to take
breaks and stay hydrated. Pace yourself. If the ground is
slick or icy, spread salt or sand to get some traction. Dont
forget, this is exercise, so warm up those muscles with
stretching first. Grip the shovel handle properly with
some distance between your hands. Think about good
posture and maintaining the natural curve of your spine.
Bend at the knees and lift with your legs, not your back,
and dont twist your body. Also, dont throw snow over
your shoulder ... go forward with it and make sure you
dont try to shovel too big of a load. For more advice, visit
