WIC is a nutrition program that helps mothers and young children eat well and stay healthy. WIC services available include nutrition and health education, vouchers to buy healthy foods for mothers and their children, personal counseling about nutrition, support and help with breast-feeding, and referrals to other health programs for families. Women who are pregnant, breast-feeding or whose pregnancy recently ended, infants under 12 months of age, and children under 5 years of age may participate in the program if they meet the following criteria:
Food packages are designed around the health risk assigned at certification or recertification. Adult women and children 1-5 years are provided food packages containing milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, juices, beans or peanut butter. The infant packages provide cereal starting at 4 months, and juices starting at 6 months. Mothers of infants are given guidance and encouraged to breastfeed, those who don’t are provided formula. We do not provide any other forms of baby foods. We do provide special types of formulas, which require a doctor's prescription authorization.
