The St. Joseph Fire Department proudly protects a population of 85,000 people living in the City of St. Joseph and three surrounding fire protection districts. The protection area covers nearly 70 square miles.

The St. Joseph Fire Department, formed in 1865, has a proud past and promising future. Four of the city’s fire stations were constructed at the turn of the 20th century and provide rich evidence of the department's history.

Composition

The department is comprised of nine fire stations, consisting of eleven companies, and staffs more than 130 employees in five divisions. The department provides first responder medical services to the citizens of St. Joseph and a large portion of Buchanan County.

Purpose

The mission of the St. Joseph Fire Department is to provide the highest level of protection of life, health, and property to the public and the organization.

The men and women of the St. Joseph Fire Department value teamwork, honesty, dependability, persistence, and hard work, taking pride in and respecting each other, the department, and our city. Striving to be courteous and compassionate to each other and the citizens served.

Membership
Membership of the department is represented by International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 77, with whom the department partners to accomplish our mission and uphold and preserve our values.

Citizen Fire Academy
The fire department will be conducting the second annual Citizen Fire Academy. The academy will be held on Wednesday evenings October 8 to November 5, from 6-9pm. The classes will be taught by St. Joseph Fire Department personnel and will include: donning firefighter turnout gear, using a fire extinguisher, advancing a charged fire hose, auto extrication, CPR, and an overview and display of special rescue and duties conducted by the department, along with tours of the St. Joseph Fire Museum and the communications center.

Citizens wanting to apply must complete an application, be 18 years of age or older, in good physical condition, able to lift 30 pounds, be a resident of St. Joseph or live in one of the fire protection districts covered by the St. Joseph Fire Department, and will be subject to a background investigation. Applications must be received by September 30, 2014. Applications can also be obtained at Fire Headquarters, 401 South 7th Street.
