Puppies for Parole Program
The Puppies for Parole Program is designed to give unwanted animals a second chance. Each dog has two handlers who focus on:
  • Basic manners; such as walking nicely on a leash, not to jump on people, and not to mouth or play bite
  • Commands; such as sit, stay, lay, leave it, and wait
  • House breaking
  • Socialization

The dog will live with the handlers, who happen to be incarcerated, for 4-8 weeks while being taught skills that will make them more adoptable.

In other areas, the adoption rates for dogs that have completed the program have been in the 90% range. The program is supported through donations and does not cost the city or shelter any money, other than labor for staff assisting in the transporting dogs and assisting with training and monitoring of the inmates.
