Health Permits
Food Establishments
Per Chapter 17, Article IV, Sections 17-106 to 17-110, in the St. Joseph Code of Ordinances, “each food service establishment / retail food store within the corporate limits of the city shall be required to obtain and post, in view of the public, a city food and beverage permit in order to operate a food service establishment / retail food store, and each permit shall be renewed on or before July 1 of each year."

Contact the Health Department to schedule an initial inspection.

Establishments are also required to obtain a business license and fire inspection permit. If an establishment is also selling liquor, cigarettes, or has an alarm system, additional permits may be required. Contact Customer Services for required permits.

Existing health permits will be sent a renewal notice each year on or around May 1 and are due on or before June 30. Instructions will also accompany each renewal.

If there are any changes to the operations of the business, you must contact Customer Services. This includes, but is not limited to, change of:
  • Managing officer
  • Ownership / corporate status
  • Site address

Tattooing
Per Chapter 17, Article IV, Sections 17-221 to 17-254, in the St. Joseph Code of Ordinances, an annual permit and inspection must be obtained by each establishment and artist involved in the practice of tattooing. Contact the Health Department to schedule an initial inspection.

Existing tattoo permits will be sent a renewal notice each year on or around May 15 and are due on or before June 30. Instructions will also accompany each renewal. If there are any changes to the operations of the business, you must contact Customer Services. This includes, but is not limited to, change of:
  • Managing officer
  • Ownership / corporate status
  • Site address
