Chase Candy Company
Chase Candy Company DisplayThe Remington Nature Center of St. Joseph is a place where history and nature collide, and exhibits detail both the natural and cultural history of Missouri. In tune with this motto, the Remington Nature Center is currently featuring a display dedicated to the Chase Candy Company of St. Joseph.

The Chase Candy Company is known best as the home of the Cherry Mash, which is “America’s favorite cherry candy bar.” However, the company also makes a variety of other fine candies, such as peanut clusters and coconut candy.

The Chase Candy Company began in 1876 as a fruit and produce business. The second floor candy factory produced fine chocolates. Around 1918, the Cherry Mash was formulated. In 1944, F.S. Yantis and Company purchased the Chase Candy Company, and still owns it today. Chase purchased the Poe Candy Company in the 1960s, which had been started by a former Chase Candy employee. Today the company continues to operate in its origins of St. Joseph, where it began making candy 135 years ago. This wonderful history can be seen through pictures, vintage candy containers and boxes, and other interesting items on display at the Remington Nature Center through March 2014.

Because tasting is better than seeing, samples of the iconic Cherry Mash candy will also be available at the front desk, for anyone who would like a taste of St. Joseph history.
