Senior Citizens TIPS & QUIPS -Tip 9
CRIME PREVENTION
Crimes that occur at home are among the most common crimes to happen. Many of these, however, are never reported. And according to a national report 75% of these crimes involve unlocked doors and windows. Although crime is a frightening problem, you can learn how to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.
-Never open your door automatically; use the optical viewer.
-If you are expecting service people, ask for identification before you open the door. If you didn’t request service, call the agency and confirm the call.
- If someone asks to use the phone, make the call for him or her. Never let a stranger come into your home.
-At night draw your blinds or draperies and always lock your doors and windows
-Don’t leave notes on your door when going out–doing so merely invites criminals to take advantage of you.
-Use timers when you go on vacation; leave a light on when you leave the house at night.
-Don’t place your keys under door mats, in planter boxes, or in other places outside your door. If you have a tendency to forget your key, leave one with a trusted neighbor.
-Finally don’t hesitate to report crimes or suspicious behaviors.
