The William Wilson Duplex
ALL OFFERS ARE WELCOME
The residence at 418-20 S. 10th Street is lovely example of more spacious high end duplexes that were available in the mid to late 1800s. The Wilson Duplex has many delightful Queen Anne influences such as the jutting bays and the complex roof form. The first and second stories are articulated by a raised brick stringer course. On the east and south facades facing the streets the windows are capped by label lintels of brick stretchers with label—stops decorated with circular designs. The lintels on the first story are segmentally arched and those on the second story are rectilinear. The windows on the other facades have segmentally arched lintels made of two rows of brick headers. In the southwest corner there is a one-story circular bay with a conical roof.
It is believed that the Wilson Duplex was constructed in the mid-1880s. 418-20 South 10th Street Mrs. Lucy Wilson, widow of William, was listed on the water permit of 1886 and a building permit for a woodshed in 1887. William H. Wilson was a clerk and ticket auditor for the Kansas City, St. Joseph, & Council Bluffs Railroad and he was listed as living at this residence in the 1889 City Directory.
The Wilson Duplex is a contributing structure in the Museum Hill Local Historic District and as such is subject to the St. Joseph Landmark Commission's Design Guidelines. If you have any questions regarding these guidelines you can access them at:
