Commander Jim Connors Welcome to the section of the City of St. Joseph Police Department website assigned to the Department’s Detective Division. The personnel of the Detective Division are tasked with responsibility for follow up investigation on all major crimes and other criminal activity. The Division is comprised of several different units that collectively perform investigative functions across a wide range of police related matters. The Street Crimes unit conducts investigations into street level drug activity that contributes to other crime. Their main function is to inhibit activity that allows criminal enterprises to move into the community. For that reason their work tends to be proactive. They also assist in developing criminal intelligence.

The Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) unit work major crime scenes attempting to uncover and develop evidence that will identify criminal perpetrators. The personnel who make up this unit are trained in scientific methodology and the use of specialized equipment that contributes to their expertise. The unit is also a member of the Incident Response Team (IRT) that, at the request of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, will respond to crime scenes in other parts of northwest Missouri.

The Cyber Crimes unit works a variety of criminal activity involving the use of computers, cell phones and videos. The crimes they investigate have involved violence, fraud and child pornography, to name just a few. They are recognized as being very adept and the unit has won a nationally recognized award for their work.

Detective Coates at the polygraph machineThe Family Crimes unit is assigned casework that involves victims and perpetrators within the family or long term intimate personal relationships. These are cases of domestic abuse and violence. This unit is also responsible for finding missing persons and runaways; and the Department’s Amber Alert program.

The Financial Crimes unit handles cases of fraud, forgery, embezzlements, financial exploitation of the elderly, identity theft, etc. The investigators of this unit stay very busy. They work closely with other local, state and federal agencies.

Additionally, the Division employs an investigator who is also the Department’s polygraphist. The personnel of the Division take pride in their work and are excellent investigators. We truly believe in the Department’s motto of Protection-Service-Partnership.
