ST. JOSEPH POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE
Fatality Vehicle Crash 4/9/12
At 2:56 a.m. this morning, officers from the St. Joseph Police Department responded to the area of 2700 Southeast Trail Street on a check well-being call. A citizen notified us that they could hear a person in the area yelling for help, but was unsure of where the yelling was coming from. At 3:08 a.m., officers requested an ambulance after locating a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a tree down in a ravine on the south side of the 2900 block of Gene Field Road. One person in the vehicle, 24 year old Michael J. Hadden, was severely injured but responsive. Two others within the vehicle, Robert O. DeGrote (34 YOA) and the driver, William L. Williams (33 YOA), were deceased. The Fire Department responded for extrication, and Mr. Hadden was transported by EMS. The vehicle was not visible from the road due to its location in the ravine, however tracks left by the vehicle indicate it was traveling west bound on Gene Field at an extremely high speed prior to leaving the roadway.
Although we cannot confirm it at this time, we believe this was likely the same vehicle that fled an attempted car stop earlier this morning. A police supervisor reported attempting to stop a dark-colored SUV for speeding northbound on the Belt south of Beck Road at around 2:34 this morning. He was unable to catch up to the vehicle to obtain a license number or other vehicle descriptions. He reported that the vehicle turned onto Gene Field from the Belt, and was last seen traveling at very high rate of speed westbound, causing him to notify dispatch that he was shutting down his efforts to catch up to the vehicle.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Information provided to the media by the St. Joseph Fire Department regarding the amount of cash discovered at the scene of the fatality fire at 2408 El Tivoli Drive on March 25 is incorrect. Fire department inspectors did not actually count the cash found at the scene, and had no knowledge of the exact amount of cash discovered. The amount provided by a fire inspector was only an approximation.
The St. Joseph Police Department is the responsible agency for the documentation and accountability of the cash collected at the scene. Police investigators counted the cash in a controlled count that was photographed. Two investigators were present at all times the money was in the possession of the police department to ensure accountability.
Contact information is Captain Kevin Castle, St. Joseph Police Department, 271.4714.

Criminals across the country are raking in billions of dollars in tax refunds through a new and brazen form of fraud that takes advantage of the IRS's fast online returns, law enforcement officials say.
Using laptops and free Wi-Fi connections, criminals are stealing identities and using the names of legitimate taxpayers to file fraudulent online tax returns. They've raked in billions, buying luxury cars, expensive jewelry and plastic surgery, police said.
