Seargeant Greg GilpinThe Crime Prevention Unit is very active with a variety of responsibilities. We provide a number of FREE presentations and services to the public. These presentations are done in individual homes or businesses throughout the city.

We work with our School Resource Officers to conduct training in our schools to ensure the students have a safe environment in which to learn.

By utilizing the experience and training of our officers we can teach almost any topic that our citizens need.

Some of the topics we cover are:

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

CITIZEN RIDE ALONG PROGRAM
The St. Joseph Police Department has a ride along program to which it is easy to apply. Contact the Support Services Division 816-236-1473 to obtain an application, or click here to open and print. Your application will be reviewed and a criminal history run. If you are approved (you must be over 18, and ot have a criminal record or warrants), they will schedule you a time and date for you to ride-along. Your ride-along will consist of actually riding in a working police car with a patrol officer. You will see the officer working during his/her shift…answering calls, stopping vehicles, and everything else that makes up a typical tour-of-duty. Riding along with an officer can be an eye-opening experience.

2008 Citizen's Police Academy class JOINT CITIZENS LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

The St. Joseph Police and Buchanan County Sheriff's Departments are proud to present an eight-week academy that is both informative and fun as well as providing a new understanding of the day-to-day operations of our departments. The instructors will be certified Law Enforcement Officers from both the City and County Departments.

This is NOT a candidate school and is designed to only give a general hands-on experience as to how the two Departments operate. This program is not a forum to debate previous enforcement contacts or personal grievances. Citizens are however, encouraged to participate in discussions as we learn from each other.

Class size is limited to thirty people, so those truly interested in making a commitment of one night a week for eight weeks in addition to a Patrol Division Ride Along should apply quickly. Completion of eight out of the eight classes is required to graduate. Applicants must be eighteen years of age or older and will be subject to a background investigation. You must be a resident of Buchanan County to apply.

Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive a diploma at a graduation ceremony conducted by the Chief of Police Chris Connally and Sheriff Mike Strong.

Next Joint Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy is 2013.
